A considered restoration of historic oak following extensive water damage

Stonebridge Fine Finishing was entrusted with the final restoration and refinement of an extensive collection of oak architectural woodwork within a Chapel in King’s Cross, London.

Following a significant water leak, the interior had undergone extensive restoration, with the cathedral’s original oak panelling, doors, frames and architectural timberwork requiring careful attention to bring the spaces back to their former character.

Our brief was to restore a sense of continuity, depth and quiet elegance, ensuring that the repaired areas sat naturally within the existing historic fabric of the building.

For a project of this nature, the quality of the final finish is every bit as important as the restoration beneath it.

The Setting

Historic ecclesiastical interiors possess a character that cannot be replicated through modern materials alone.

The Chapels oak work formed an important part of the architectural language of the space from substantial timber panelling and beautifully proportioned doors and smaller elements of joinery.

Years of age had given the oak its own depth and patina. Following the water damage and subsequent restoration, achieving a harmonious appearance across the timber presented a particular challenge.
