This project has been conceived as a bespoke finishing scheme, combining traditional hand-applied craftsmanship, meticulous surface preparation and premium low-VOC materials to create a refined and cohesive finish throughout the property.

The existing pine handrail was carefully transformed to complement the surrounding mahogany handrail from the ground floor to first, while the painted woodwork throughout will be was refinished using Little Greene paints, selected for their exceptional depth of colour, refined finish and suitability for high-quality interior decoration.

The intention is to create an interior finish that feels timeless, considered and quietly luxurious, with every element treated individually rather than approached as a standard production decorating application.

Bespoke Mahogany-Matched Handrail

The existing pine handrail was carefully prepared and developed into a bespoke mahogany-matched finish to the already existing Mahogany Handrail.

Rather than simply applying a uniform brown coating, the colour and tonal character was carefully blended throughout the whole handrail. The objective was to introduce the appropriate warmth, depth and richness so that the handrail integrates naturally with the surrounding fresh paint work.

Particular attention was given to the existing grain, profiles and architectural form of the handrail, creating a finish that feels sympathetic to the original timber rather than disguising its character.

The completed handrail was designed to sit seamlessly within the interior scheme, creating the impression of a deliberately commissioned piece of joinery.

Premium Little Greene Paint System

For the painted woodwork, Little Greene was used as the principal decorative paint brand, providing a premium colour palette and sophisticated range of finishes.

Where appropriate to the substrate and required finish, Little Greene's water-based Intelligent range was specified to provide a durable, refined finish while maintaining a low-VOC, low-odour approach. Little Greene describes its water-based paints as having virtually zero VOC content, with Intelligent finishes specifically suited to interior woodwork.

The selection of finish was determined according to the clients requirements of the joinery, with consideration given to durability, sheen level, natural light and the overall character of the interior.

The use of carefully selected low-VOC materials forms an important part of the specification, providing a premium decorative finish while reducing unnecessary solvent and odour within the living environment.

Traditional Hand-Painted Application

All decorative finishing was undertaken exclusively by brush, preserving the character and quality associated with traditional high-end finishing.

The application was controlled carefully at every stage, with each coat worked methodically and laid off to minimise visible brush marks and unnecessary strokes.

This approach is particularly important under natural and directional lighting, where excessive brush movement can become immediately apparent.

The objective is to achieve a calm, smooth and settled hand-painted surface, with the minimum possible visible brushwork while retaining the subtle character of a genuinely hand-finished interior.

Meticulous Preparation

Exceptional preparation formed the foundation of the entire project.

Existing painted surfaces were thoroughly cleaned, carefully abraded and made good. Previous imperfections, minor surface defects and irregularities were addressed before the application of the finishing system.

Timber profiles, mouldings, edges and junctions were individually prepared to ensure that the final coating follows the architecture of the joinery with precision.

Where required, compatible primers and preparation products were selected to ensure adhesion and longevity, with the final decorative system specified according to the individual substrate rather than applying a generic coating approach.

Each stage was allowed to develop correctly before progressing to the next, ensuring that the finished appearance is built upon a properly prepared foundation.

Final Finishing

The final stages were treated as a detailed finishing process rather than simply the completion of the paint application.

All areas were inspected under appropriate lighting conditions, with particular attention given to brush marks, coverage, edges, colour consistency, sheen uniformity and the relationship between adjacent surfaces.

The finished handrail and painted woodwork were assessed as a complete interior scheme, ensuring that the mahogany-matched timber and Little Greene painted surfaces work together harmoniously.

The Finished Result

The finished property presented a bespoke, cohesive and highly refined decorative scheme, combining the warmth and character of mahogany with the sophisticated colour and finish of Little Greene paints.

The pine blended into the mahogany handrail, which became an integrated feature of the existing interior. While the newly painted woodwork provides a fresh, elegant and enduring finish throughout.

Every aspect of the project was approached with an emphasis on craftsmanship and precision.

The desired results were not simply newly painted woodwork, but an interior finish that feels architecturally considered, beautifully executed and genuinely bespoke, with the quality of the workmanship evident in the calmness, consistency and refinement of every finished surface.
