Walnut Step Colour Match | CR8
Specialist Finishing for your Luxury Home
Project Overview
Matching a New Walnut Step to Recently Installed Walnut Flooring
Stonebridge Fine Finishing was commissioned to complete the finishing work on a newly installed walnut step in CR8, with the aim of matching it seamlessly to recently installed walnut flooring.
Although both the step and flooring were made from walnut, the newly installed step did not initially have the same colour, tone or finish as the surrounding floor.
The brief was to carefully develop a finish for the step that would complement the flooring and create a more cohesive transition between the two timber surfaces.
The Project
The property had recently undergone an update that included the installation of new walnut flooring.
A new walnut step had also been installed to connect the different levels within the space. While the materials were both walnut, natural timber can vary considerably in colour and appearance.
The step therefore required specialist finishing and colour matching to bring it visually in line with the newly installed floor.
The project involved:
Assessing the new walnut step
Using the existing walnut flooring as the colour reference
Developing a bespoke colour match
Enhancing the natural walnut tones
Matching the overall sheen and appearance
Applying the appropriate protective finish
Creating a seamless transition between step and floor
Matching New Walnut to New Walnut
It might seem straightforward to match two newly installed pieces of the same timber, but natural walnut can vary significantly in colour, grain and tone.
The flooring and step may have originated from different sections of timber, suppliers or batches, meaning that the raw materials do not necessarily look identical.
This is where specialist colour matching becomes important.
Rather than relying on a standard walnut stain, the finish for the step was carefully developed with the actual flooring as the reference.
Developing the Colour Match
The existing walnut floor provided the benchmark for the finished step.
The colour was carefully developed to complement the flooring, taking into account the natural variation within the walnut itself.
The aim was not to make the step appear artificially identical to every individual floor board, but to ensure that it sat naturally within the overall colour and tone of the floor.
Particular attention was given to the warmth, depth and balance of the walnut so that the completed step would look like a natural continuation of the flooring.
Finishing the Walnut Step
Once the colour had been matched, the new walnut step was carefully finished.
The finishing process was designed to complement the appearance of the flooring while providing the step with an appropriate level of protection for regular foot traffic.
The final sheen was also considered, ensuring that the step did not appear noticeably glossier or flatter than the surrounding floor.
This attention to both colour and sheen helped create a much more cohesive result.
Creating a Seamless Transition
Steps and flooring meet at an important visual junction within a room.
If the colours differ significantly, the transition can become distracting, even when both surfaces are made from high-quality timber.
For this CR8 project, the aim was to make the newly installed walnut step feel like a natural part of the flooring scheme.
The completed finish created a much closer relationship between the two surfaces, allowing the natural walnut to flow visually from the floor onto the step.

Every colour-matching project is approached individually. Timber species, grain, lighting, existing finishes and the surrounding materials can all influence the final appearance.
Matching Timber After Installation
Colour matching is particularly useful when new timber elements are introduced into an existing or recently completed interior.
Even when the same timber species is specified throughout a project, natural variation can mean that additional finishing is required to achieve a consistent overall appearance.
For this CR8 walnut step, careful finishing allowed the newly installed timber to complement the recently installed walnut flooring.
The Result
The completed walnut step now sits naturally alongside the flooring, with a carefully developed colour and finish that complements the surrounding timber.
The natural character of the walnut remains visible, while the difference between the newly installed step and floor has been reduced.
The result is a more refined and cohesive transition between the two surfaces.
